Working with Overprints

If you are seeing that the Mox review tool that path and font colors do not match what you are seeing in Adobe Illustrator and some PDF viewers like Mac Preview, there may be an issue with knockouts in the source file. We suggest the following guidelines for creating properly formed PDFs.

The Mox review tool matches Adobe Acrobat colors with simulate overprinting on. If you look at the PDF in Acrobat and turn on the Simulate Overprinting flag (look in Tools > Print Production > Output Preview) this shows you exactly how the file will print. You can toggle this setting off and on to see how the file will look with and without the knockout. The Overprint Preview can also be enabled in Illustrator to mimic Mox, Acrobat and the printed output. If you are seeing discrepancies between Acrobat and Illustrator, you may need to adjust the knockout.

Illustrator View > Overprint Preview menu:

The color called "white" in design programs is not an actual ink that gets printed unless it is defined as a spot color (i.e. when printing on clear film or metallic substrates) instead "white" is the absence of ink. Therefore, objects colored "white" that are set to overprint another color will not be visible. If you are seeing discrepancies between Acrobat and Illustrator, you may need to adjust the Overprint attribute of the "white" objects.

So, if you are working with a white border on a dark blue background, the white path must knock out the blue ink for the white substrate to show through. In this case, your artwork provider or graphic designer may need to adjust the source file and re-save the PDF.

Fixing the knockout in the source file

In the original AI source file, your designer may need to fix the knockout by selecting each path in Adobe AI, choosing Window > Attribute and then unchecking the Overprint Stroke option. In addition to unchecking the Overprint Stroke, the designer may also have to uncheck Overprint Fill to get the object to show up correctly as objects can have fills and/or strokes. Try turning this off for one of the problem areas, save the file as PDF again, upload the file to Mox and open the review tool. The colors in the review tool should now simulate the overprint preview and match Illustrator.
